Please join us on May 16 and 17 to explore art in our Nation’s Capital! Traveling with you will be Chase Westfall, Interim Executive Director of the ICA. Please note that events and times on this itinerary are subject to change as final details come together. A final itinerary, including specific start times and complete details for events, will be provided to registered trip participants in May. Space is limited, and we ask that participants please register by Friday, May 10, 2024. This trip registration includes transportation, lunches, tour and museum fees, and an evening reception. Visit the museum’s 50th Anniversary Exhibition, Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960
This special exhibition captures shifting cultural landscapes through the largely chronological presentation of 270 artworks in the museum’s permanent collection by 126 artists—including Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet, Lee Krasner, Wifredo Lam, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock—made during 100 turbulent and energetic years. The exhibition also includes contemporary work by 19 artists, including VCUarts alumni Torkwase Dyson and Loie Hollowell, whose work will be on view at the ICA at VCU in Fall 2024, and Rashid Johnson, who exhibited at the ICA in 2018. Tour the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden with Molly Donovan, Curator of Art, 1975-present
Featuring works by Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Louise Bourgeois, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen and more, the Sculpture Garden fulfills the centuries-old intentions of Charles Pierre L’Enfant, who, in his designs for The Mall in the 1790s, included a public, landscaped garden on the north side of Washington, DC’s “8th Street axis.”

Tour The Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and Its Legacy with exhibition curator Shelley Langdale, Curator & Head of Modern Prints and Drawings
Through their bold, inventive art, the German expressionists sought to interpret the dramatic changes in the world around them during the tumultuous historical period 1900–1930, marked by world war and revolution. The Anxious Eye presents insights into the work of these innovative, early 20th-century artists and their continuing impact a century later. The exhibition features recent acquisitions as well as works that have rarely, if ever, been on view. Among the artists represented are Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz, Egon Schiele, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Independent Exploration of Bonnard's Worlds Exhibition
Bonnard’s Worlds, the first major retrospective of Pierre Bonnard’s work at The Phillips Collection in 20 years, explores the sensory spheres of experience that fueled the French artist’s creative practice. Bonnard’s immediate surroundings were the lifeblood of his work, and this exhibition is guided by those personal spaces that found expression in his art through his recording of remembered sensations. Governed neither by chronology nor geography, but by measures of intimacy, the exhibition transports the visitor from the larger realms in which Bonnard lived—the landscapes of Paris, Normandy, and the South of France—to the most intimate interior spaces of his dwellings and his thoughts. Bonnard’s Worlds reunites some of Bonnard’s most celebrated works from museums across Europe and the United States, as well as many less-exhibited works drawn from private collections worldwide.

The Rubell Museum DC brings the Rubell Family’s extensive contemporary art collection to the nation’s capital and serves as a place for the public to engage with the most compelling national and international artists of our time.The collection is distinguished by its unprecedented range and depth that has enabled the museum to organize over 50 exhibitions during the last three decades drawn entirely from its holdings in painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation.
