Exploring Contemporary Art with the ICA at VCU: DC and Glenstone

Thank you for your interest in being with the Institute for Contemporary Art this spring as we explore art in our Nation’s Capital and at Glenstone. Traveling with you will be Dominic Willsdon, Executive Director of the ICA. We are delighted to present the following preliminary itinerary for the trip. Please note that events on this itinerary are subject to change as final details come together. A final itinerary, including specific start times and complete details for events, will be provided to registered trip participants in April.

Wednesday, April 26, 2023
- 9:00 am - Motorcoach departs from ICA at VCU
- 12:00 pm - Arrive at The National Gallery of Art for lunch
- 1:00 pm - National Gallery of Art featuring Philip Guston Now
- Philip Guston Now charts the 50-year career of one of America’s most influential modern artists through more than 150 paintings and drawings. Renowned in his time and in ours, Guston’s work continues to resonate, attract, and provoke, raising crucial questions about the relationship of art to beauty and brutality, freedom and doubt, politics and the imagination.
- 2:30 pm - Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
- The Hirshhorn is a leading voice for contemporary art and culture that provides a national platform for the art and artists of our time, and is committed to providing the artists of today a global platform to explore new ways to create, with performance, digital media, video, and technology.
- 4:30 pm - Smithsonian American Art Museum
- Tour SAAM's Contemporary Art Collection with ICA Director Dominic Willsdon

Thursday, April 27, 2023
- 10:00 am - Depart Canopy by Hilton Hotel via Motorcoach
- 10:15 am - The REACH at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
- Steven Holl, the architect of the ICA’s Markel Center, designed The REACH, a place where visitors, audiences, and artists can come together for collaboration, experimentation, and exploration in the spirit of President Kennedy’s vision for a new frontier for the arts. In addition to the stunning architecture, works by Alma Thomas, Andy Warhol, and Robert Rauschenberg will be on view.
- 11:00 am - Depart The REACH
- 12:00 pm - Arrive at Glenstone
- Seamlessly integrating art, architecture, and nature, and guided by the personal vision of its founders, Glenstone assembles important post-World War II artworks that trace the greatest historical shifts in the way we experience and understand art of the 20th and 21st centuries. These works are presented in a series of refined indoor and outdoor spaces designed to facilitate meaningful encounters for visitors.
- 3:30 pm - Depart for Richmond via Motorcoach
- 5:30 pm - Arrive at ICA (approximate arrival time)
Please note that this itinerary includes walks of up to 1 mile between activities.
Please note that your trip participation fee includes ground transportation from Richmond to DC, from DC to Glenstone, and from Glenstone to Richmond, two lunches, one dinner, and admission to events on the itinerary. Your trip participation fee does not cover accommodations, meals beyond those outlined on the itinerary, or other travel expenses that may be incurred.
