Description

Join us as we will immerse ourselves in the time-honored tradition of painting the natural world and enriching our understanding of the genre and appreciation of our awe-inspiring Colorado backdrop! This workshop will be taught by me, Sara (Sassa) Geller. Over the past year, I have shifted my artistic focus back to painting exquisite Colorado landscapes. By popular demand, I have put together this four-day (Sept. 4, 8, 11 and 15) crash-course in oil painting our natural world. In this class I will explain my process in finding a scene that I connect with and painting it. (Sign up now, as class is limited to only 9 people!)

Throughout the course, you will learn the meaning and application of the following key concepts, as they apply to oil painting: viewfinder, ground layers, thin to fat oil painting, imprimatura, glazing, and balance.

Day 1 (Sunday, Sept. 4, 10:00am - 2:00pm): After meeting at the gallery for a presentation about my landscape painting process, we will travel to Red Rocks area take a quick hike. We will explore with our provided viewfinders (a rectangle cut out of card stock paper) and whip out our phones to take many photo references. You will be encouraged to jot down notes regarding your general feelings about the landscape, colors, and atmospheric conditions. You should take notes on what stands out as most beautiful or intriguing about our landscape which you can reference back at the gallery.

Upon our return to the gallery, we will select our favorite shots. I will print these individual pictures and we will regroup in front of our treated Masonite panels on which we will be painting. We will meditate on the feeling and essence of the natural environment we visited and review our written notes. We will finally plunge into our oil paintings using the provided prints and medium on provided easels. All supplies will be included*, but please feel free to bring your personal paints. I will instruct upon the helpful technique of sketching out an underpainting to create the composition and arranging our light and dark values. Underpaintings are not absolutely necessary but very useful for beginners or complex, challenging projects.

Day 2 (Thursday, Sept. 8, 6:00pm - 9:00pm) and Day 3 (Sunday, Sept. 11, 10:00am - 1:00pm): These two days are very important for allowing the paint to dry in between sessions. With the layers having dried a bit, we will continue to apply more colors to our underpaintings to really bring the paintings to life. Instructions, tips and pointers will be provided throughout.

Day 4 (Thursday, Sept. 15, 6:00pm - 9:00pm) Today we will return for our final painting day for applying luminous glazing layers and finishing touches. This is an exercise in patience, as layers benefit from dry time in between sessions. We will end with a rewarding wine or tea and self/peer critique. We'll celebrate the creation of our new artwork!

Sara "Sassa" Geller has studied art throughout her life and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and computations from Clark University. Before settling into the pro-artist and gallerist lifestyle, she practiced professionally in art, restoration, art foundry work for sculptors, and teaching art to individuals with memory impairment.

*Provided materials: viewfinder, paint brushes, solvent (terpenoid), medium, treated Masonite panel, your printed image, and oil paint. Feel free to bring your own beverages if you would like. Please bring a notebook and, if you would like, any of your own materials you may already be comfortable with.

Workshop / Class is only $82.00 and space is very limited, so sign up today!
