The Cape Fear Bonsai Society, established in 2001, is a group that meets monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai.
The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers, and a sharing of Bonsai expertise. Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai.

Observers are welcome to attend at no cost and learn alongside participants. An observer RSVP option is available for those who wish to watch and learn without working on a tree.
Cost & Materials
Workshop Fee: Free
Participants may bring their own tree, soil, and container at no charge.
We will have 20 repotting material sets available on site for a $20 materials fee per tree (includes pot and soil).
Material sets cannot be divided or shared.
Tie-down wire and drainage screening will be provided.
About the Session
Participants may work on trees selected earlier in the day or bring appropriate nursery stock of their own.
Repotting is the first step in transitioning nursery stock toward bonsai. A future follow-up workshop—held after the tree has recovered and is growing strongly—will focus on initial styling. Together, these sessions emphasize process, patience, and long-term development.
Creating a recognizable bonsai is often a multi-year journey—commonly three years or more—and this workshop represents the foundational first step.
Why We Repot
Nursery trees are grown for rapid landscape growth, not long-term container health. Repotting:
• Improves drainage and root oxygen
• Begins correcting circling or poorly structured roots
• Prepares the tree for recovery and future training
This session emphasizes health and preparation rather than finished styling.
What We’ll Do
With guidance from experienced members, participants will:
• Assess whether repotting is appropriate for each tree
• Perform light to moderate root work as timing allows
• Position the tree properly and discuss aftercare
Some species may receive light root work or slip-potting only, depending on plant condition and seasonal timing.
