The CFBS Tree Development Studio continues as we prepare our trees for one of the most important periods of the bonsai year.
This session will focus on spring development, roots, soil, pots and repotting decisions. We'll revisit trees from earlier Studios, see how they've progressed, and work through the specific skills and next steps we've identified along the way.
Should this tree be repotted this year—or left alone? Is the current soil working? Does it need a bonsai pot, a training container, or another year of development? What root work is appropriate? How should the tree be secured? And what should happen after the repot?
Bring the tree and we'll work through the decision together.
You don't need to have attended August or November. The Tree Development Studio is a continuing four-session series, but each session stands on its own.
Bring a workshop tree, an auction find, a tree you've been developing for years—or simply a tree you're not sure what to do with next. We'll start wherever you and your tree are today.
Bring one primary bonsai or pre-bonsai, your normal bonsai tools, and your Tree Development Record if you've participated previously.
Planning to repot? Bring the pot or training container, soil, drainage screens, tie-down wire and other materials you intend to use. If you're unsure what you need, don't buy it just for the Studio—bring the tree and we'll help you develop a plan.
You may bring a second tree as time permits.
Observe the work, join the discussions, ask questions and learn from the different trees in the room.
Every time you work on a tree, make a thoughtful improvement that moves it one step closer to a refined bonsai.

The Cape Fear Bonsai Society, established in 2001, is a group that meets monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai.
The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers, and a sharing of Bonsai expertise. Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai.
