Fiddle/Banjo: Playing Outside the Lines (Level - Intermediate and up) 
at Little Roots Studio (46 Maple St. Florence, MA 01060)

Join seasoned musicians Brian Slattery and Maggie Shar for an old-time fiddle and clawhammer banjo workshop focused on taking tunes to the next level.  Participants will learn a unique approach to playing outside the lines but within the idiom, using the building blocks of  key rhythmic patterns combined with chords and improvisation concepts, that can be applied to any tune, whether they're just learning it or have known it for years.


Maggie Shar is an award winning clawhammer banjo player, performer and teacher.   She has been playing clawhammer banjo for nearly two decades.   Her unique syncopated, expressive style has earned her 1st  place in the 2018 Northeast Fiddler's Convention Banjo Contest,  1st place at the 2018 Oldtone Roots Festival Banjo Contest,  Honorable Mention in the 2020 Online Old-time banjo competition, and 3rd place in the 2022 Online Old-time banjo contest.  She  performs regularly with  The Ephemeral Stringband and  The Moon ShellsShe is also co-founder of Little Roots,  a popular local early childhood music program and band.   Maggie teaches private and group lessons in person, at camps, and online to banjo players of all ages around the world. 
 

Brian Slattery  has been playing Appalachian fiddle professionally for 25 years, most notably with the Moon Shells and with Mississippi music scholar Harry Bolick. He teaches regular private lessons and has taught at Augusta Heritage Center, Spice on Snow, the Dance Flurry, and other places. He also plays jazz, Eastern European, and other improvisational music with a variety of ensembles. He lives near New Haven, CT.

 

This workshop is presented in partnership with The Parlor Room School of Music.
