Bundle Price: $100 GA / $80 MEMBERS

Workshop Capacity: 25
Minimum: 8

For singers and curious listeners; a workshop to sharpen the musical ears and help us invent and sing harmonies. We’ll take songs that are easy to pick up (folk songs, popular songs, pub-style singalongs, etc.) and sing our way into the mysteries of what makes their harmonies tick. There will be some “music theory” in this class, but we will keep it to a homeopathic dose, concentrating on ears, voices, and intuition.

Maybe you want to get better at harmonizing on the fly when singing with friends, or working up more satisfying harmonies in your band? Maybe you get disoriented when you try to sing harmonies? We’ll work on the skills of orienting and reorienting our ears and voices with a variety of exercises and games and plenty of group singing and repeated choruses. Returning students from previous Finding Vocal Harmonies sessions can expect familiar modalities but also new material including harmonizing in minor keys and finding “crunchy” or dissonant notes that work.

Meet your Instructor: Anna Patton

Anna Patton is a versatile clarinetist, singer, composer, arranger, and educator driven by musical curiosity. She is the co-founder of Zara Bode’s Little Big Band, in which she plays clarinet and writes the band’s arrangements. She also works with the internationally touring dance band Elixir, which plays American and Celtic fiddle tunes with a horn section, influenced by early jazz, R&B, and classical music. She has recorded albums as a solo artist and with Elixir, and appears on albums by many other artists including Julian Gerstin, Julie Vallimont, and Andrew VanNorstrand. She directs the Soubrette Jazz Choir based at the Vermont Jazz Center, which performs her creative arrangements of historical and contemporary American music.

Anna has a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation program, with a focus on Aural Skills, Composition, and Early Jazz. She is endlessly fascinated by how the ear makes sense of music and is excited to explore harmonies with participants at the Parlor Room
