Green Book (2018, PG13, 2h 10m)
Inspired by a true friendship. Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.

Green Book won the prestigious Best Picture award at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019, a victory that came with both celebration and controversy, as it also snagged wins for Mahershala Ali (Best Supporting Actor) and Best Original Screenplay, telling a segregation-era story about a Black pianist and his white driver. The film's win over favorites like Roma was seen as a surprise and sparked debate about its portrayal of race, with some critics finding it a "white savior" narrative despite its message of love and overcoming differences. Remarkable, funny, and heartwarming!
