Amelia Island is famous for its million-year-old fossils including shark teeth, pectens (rare & elusive fossil scallop shells), and bones from megafauna like megalodons, mammoths, and giant beavers. Meet with the Fernandina Fossils team of experts who will teach you how to become a fossil hunter and send you out with everything you need to discover the magic of Amelia Island fossil treasures yourself.
Your adventure begins with an informative & hands-on fossil briefing at the Fossil Info center at 508 Ash Street in downtown Fernandina Beach, where you'll be given a guided tour of the exhibits. You will learn what kind of fossils can be found on the Island, where to look for them, and hunting techniques to increase your chances of finding these treasures. You will be given an explorer's kit packed with real sample fossils, ID charts, a loot jar to secure your finds, and most importantly, a treasure map marked with productive hunt locations. After you've spent time with the Fern Foss team, you are free to go out exploring on your own.
Return to the Fossil Info Center within a week to show us your fossils and memorialize your experience with a personalized fossil identification and memento-making session. You'll leave with a keepsake display frame or keychain created using your favorite fossil find.
