Working with fresh plants is its' own kind of joy. Growing, Harvesting, Making Extracts and Using herbs that you nurtured from a seed or young plant is an expereince that will bring you joy in ways that are hard to describe. Are you also curious about making and using herbal extracts for yourself and family? Have you been dabbling in herbalism, but want to make sure your creations are safe and effective? This class is ideal for the beginning to intermediate student of herbalism and will help build confidence, a working materia medica in a supportive community setting.
Each class will cover an in-depth exploration of the uses and benefits of the specific herbal extract and 3 medicinal herbs that extract well using that method. Students will explore using the Folk and Weight-to-Volume methods of making extracts, with an emphasis on safety and potency of preparations. After the workshop series, students are expected to be competent and confident in working with a variety of medicinal herbs and extracts. Students will also learn good research methods, Good Manufacturing Practices for making, storing, and selling herbal extracts and an introduction to a wide variety of teachers, schools and traditions of herbal medicine. Herbal Extracts may include water extracts, alcohol, vingear, and glycerin based tinctures, infused oils and salves.
This class series will also feature fabulous guest teachers from the region and beyond!

Instead of a scholarship program, I am offering Sliding Scale tuition rates for this class series. I have been exploring different ways to make my offerings more accessible, while still working for a sustainable income stream for my family. If you are interested in learning more about Sliding Scale as a tool for Economic Justice, please check out this article by Alexis J. Cunningfolk. The descriptions of the different tiers are pulled from her article.
Full Price Tuition represents the true value for the workshop series. "If you have access to financial security, own property or have personal savings, you would not traditionally qualify for sliding scale services."
Tiers 1 and 2 are referred to as The Middle Costs and "reflects the practitioner's acknowledgement that paying the full cost would prevent some folks from being able to attend, but who do not honestly find themselves reflected in either descriptions for the highest cost or the lowest."
Tier 3 - is referred to as the Bottom Cost and "represents an honest acknowledgment by the teacher and practitioner that there are folks whose economic circumstances would prevent them from being a part of classes if there was not a deliberate opportunity made for them to access services at a cost that is reflective of their economic realities."
When registering for the series and selecting which tier is best for you, please keep in mind that if you select a lower tier and you can afford a higher tier, you are limiting access to the workshop series for people who truly need financial flexibility. Two of the most important goals for me as an herbalist are connecting people to the plants and building community. By fairly contributing what you can in tuition, you are helping me reach these goals for our community.

I would like to infuse the local community with a sense of responsibility and support for individual health. Being able to heal yourself is an empowering act that lays a foundation for the ability to heal your community."
