How can play be therapeutic? Participants in this workshop will learn how play AS therapy differs from play IN therapy. Play Therapy is an effective, developmentally appropriate treatment for children, adolescents and even adults. This workshop provides a history and introduction to play therapy theories. Understanding the history of play therapy is an essential foundation for application of play in therapy. 

Learning objectives: After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the history and foundations of the profession of play therapy
  • Explain what play therapy is and how the therapeutic powers of play facilitate change 
  • Identify and differentiate between the therapeutic powers of play.
  • Identify three early play therapists and at least one of their main contributions 
  • Describe the formation of the Association for Play Therapy including founders and mission. 
  • List at least four seminal theories in play therapy and briefly describe each 
  • Describe aspects of play inherent across play therapy models 
  • Describe the developmental process of a Registered Play Therapistâ„¢ and reasoning for the stages of learning to effectively apply play therapy
