This workshop introduces sand tray across the lifespan. The Holding space for the human experience of depression, trauma, and loss is powerful with experiential therapies. Sand tray is a deeply emotional therapy method that allows containment, externalization, and expression across the lifespan in ways beyond words. Foundations of sand tray include creating a sand tray space, finding essential supplies, and selecting miniatures. Decision-making about directive and nondirective approaches will be discussed. Seminal theories will be discussed in terms of how theories guide the process. This workshop allows for an introduction to core concepts as well as experiential learning. This workshop introduces sand therapy for people across the lifespan. We will discuss basics, including creating a sand tray space and the selection of miniatures and placement. Seminal theories will be discussed in terms of how approaches guide the sand tray process. Core concepts and themes will be explored.
Learning objectives: After this workshop, participants will be able to:
· Describe sand tray as a therapeutic tool
· List at least two seminal theories and briefly describe how sand tray is used within these theories
· List sand tray categories of miniatures for sand tray play therapy.
· Describe the benefits of directive and nondirective methods within the sand tray. (To prompt or not to prompt, that is the question.)
· List five prompts and decision-making about their use
· Describe basic neuroscience supporting sand tray for emotional healing
