Tiernan Alexander is an artist, educator, historian, and writer. She received an MFA in ceramics from University of the Arts and an MA in Material Culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware. She has taught art, ceramics, and web design to a broad range of students from children to adults in the United States and Mexico. Tiernan’s artistic practice consists of environmental installation works that include ceramics, textiles, and found objects.
In her practice, she uses art as a means of community building and connecting to the past. She was the artist in residence at Winterthur Museum, Library, and Garden where she highlighted historic objects and stories through artistic installations. Her commitment to art as a tool for self-expression, community, and healing has led her to work with organizations like the Creative Vision Factory in Wilmington, DE, a community arts center for people with behavioral and mental health issues. At CVF, Tiernan oversaw large-scale community art-installations that were designed collaboratively with the communities who would live with them. In her varied career, Tiernan has also worked as a museum and city tour guide, project manager, web-designer, research assistant, and writer.
She has published a book about Tufting with her partner, Tim Eads, called Tuft the World: An Illustrated Manual to Tufting Gorgeous Rugs, Decor, and More.
