Join us and help protect our historic church for the future: become a Friend of St James’ Church
St. James’ Church, Hamsterley has sat on its knoll overlooking the Wear and Lynburn valleys since circa 1180, perhaps even since Anglo-Saxon times, existing alongside as many as fifty generations of us. Think how many people have passed through the door; just how many have worshipped here, how many christenings, weddings and funerals have been held and possibly a thousand Easters and Christmases celebrated too. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a beautiful and ancient church with many of the original features still intact. But, like all old buildings, it is expensive and difficult to maintain with restoration work required year after year; way beyond the means of the loyal but dwindling congregation.
We are all the present custodians of this landmark of living history and there is a danger that it will be lost during our time unless we try and make the building secure, safe and sound, accessible and relevant for life today. The Friends is a charity with no religious affiliation, for those of all faiths and none who are keen to see the building not only survive but thrive. Our sole purpose is to help shoulder the responsibility of maintaining and enhancing the Grade I Listed structure that is St. James’ Church.
