Join the Cape Fear Bonsai Society for a full-day bonsai demonstration with Jim Doyle of Nature’s Way Nursery.
For this special program, Jim will bring trees from his own collection to work on throughout the day. Working with familiar material allows Jim to select trees that are ready for meaningful work and to approach each one with an understanding of its history, current stage of development, and long-term direction.
Rather than working toward a predetermined finished result, Jim can perform the work that is appropriate for each tree at this stage of its development. As he works, he will discuss his design process, techniques, and long-term strategies, explaining not only what he is doing, but why.
The extended format gives attendees an opportunity to follow the decision-making process in depth and observe techniques such as evaluation, pruning, wiring, styling, and refinement when appropriate to the material. Jim will share insights and answer questions throughout the day.
In keeping with the weekend’s literati theme, attendees are encouraged to bring a literati bonsai of their own, at any stage of development, to share.
Lunch Break: 11:45 AM–1:15 PM
Attendees are welcome to join us for lunch at Okami, within walking distance of OLLI. We plan to make a group reservation for those who wish to join. Lunch is at each attendee’s own expense. Attendees are also welcome to bring a lunch or make their own lunch plans.
This program is suitable for both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. Guests are welcome, and attendees may join us for all or part of the day.
Those interested in hands-on instruction may also want to attend the Literati Bonsai Workshop with Jim Doyle on Saturday, September 26, offered separately with participation limited to eight trees.

The Cape Fear Bonsai Society, established in 2001, is a group that meets monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai.
The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers, and a sharing of Bonsai expertise. Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai.
