Description

Learn a variety of futomomo (bent-leg) ties for various purposes, preferences, & body geometries!

Through demonstration, explanation, and hands-on practice,  workshop participants will learn a variety of suspendable futomomo ties for a diversity of bodies and purposes.  The class covers methods and techniques to evaluate which type of bent-leg tie is appropriate/best for the particular situation and individual.

The class includes multiple complete futomomo patterns, as well as a focus on specific structural elements--including rope placement, wrap thickness, angling, overall & relative tension, and specific frictions and knots--that each are impactful variables on  how the tie feels and loads.  The class will also cover multiple ways of attaching uplines to these different futomomo ties for suspension, and how those different attachment points & attachment methods can impact how the tie feels, loads, and functions in the air.

Partnering: Attendees are welcome to attend solo or with a partner.  Class content is designed to work both for tying pairs a for self-tying individuals.

Prior Skills/Experience : Participants who are tying must know a single-column tie (preferably Somerville bowline), reverse tension, half hitch, and square knot. Everyone in the class should be aware of their bodies and able to communicate about their physical capacities and limits.

This class is designed primarily for people who have some experience with futomomo ties, but are seeking to refine and expand the range of their futomomo knowledge, or perhaps to find a futomomo that is better & more sustainable.  However, people who are new to futomomo ties are also welcome in the class.
Participants with prior suspension experience--who can tie hangers and lock off uplines--will have the opportunity to fully suspend in the class.  For participants who do not yet have those suspension/upline skills, this class is a great opportunity to build skills in tying suspendable harnesses that you can ultimately use for suspension, and that also can be used for non-suspension ties.

What to Bring: 3 - 4 full (~25-35 ft.) lengths of rope.  There will also rope available for sale at the workshop.

Please RSVP with the name you want on the door list!
