Woody Guthrie, the legendary folk singer and songwriter, suffered from Huntington's disease (HD), a genetic neurological disorder. This annual fundraiser led by The Guthrie Center supports medical research and assists families caring for afflicted loved ones living in extreme poverty. Registration at the Guthrie Center runs from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Sunday, May 18. A caravan of old VW buses, reminiscent of Arlo Guthrie's VW bus, drives people to Theresa’s Stockbridge Café, where the walk back to the Guthrie Center will begin at 10:00 a.m. Theresa’s is the site of the original “Alice’s Restaurant,” which was made famous in Arlo Guthrie's song of that name. The walk honors the legacy of Arlo's father, Woody, and his mother, Marjorie, who founded the now worldwide Huntington’s Disease advocacy movement to promote care, research and awareness. For people unable to make the walk, checks may be sent to HD WALK, c/o 216 Beach Rd., Washington, MA 01223.
What happens during the Garbage Trail Walk? Each mile along the way has a water stop, representing key sites in the Alice’s Restaurant story. These include a stop at the old police station/ town hall in Stockbridge, location of the original jail where Arlo spent the night after being arrested for dumping garbage at the town dump on Thanksgiving, when it was closed. Next is the site of the original dump, marked with a sign, where walkers can enjoy some live music. At the third stop, Ben & Jerry’s will donate ice cream in honor of one of the HD families. At the fourth stop, volunteers will hand out pickles, noting Arlo’s Motorcycle Song, “I don't want a pickle. Just want to ride on my motorcycle.” At the fifth stop, Housatonic Village, Annie Guthrie and other family members affiliated with their label, Rising Sun Records, will give out souvenirs. After the walk, free refreshments will be provided at the Guthrie Center, with music by Bobby Sweet.
