How to Cut a Curve

An introductory gem carving workshop with international award winning designer Naomi Sarna.

If you think carving a curve is simple, wait until you get going in an introductory gem carving workshop!  Curves have many dimensions and we will investigate how to carve and polish complex curves.  This exercise will get you going in gem carving and understanding how light is bent and shaped by curves.

Important Details About the Workshop:

  • Every student must bring their own dremel (in working order). If battery operated, bring extra batteries. Plug in? Bring a 12' electric cord.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian's permission to attend. Under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.
  • If you have protective eye gear please bring it. The museum has extra, if you don't.
  • For those with long hair, remember to bring a tie back.
  • No bracelets or rings while working.
  • Optional, if desired, a magnifier (i.e. an optivisor), waterproof apron.

All other supplies will be provided!

About Naomi Sarna:

Central to Naomi’s work is the play of light and shadow, movement, texture and the use of bold color combinations. According to Naomi, carving is a relatively simple process using a stationery arbor. What she says is more complex is creating the art that become the carvings seen in her jewelry and precious objects. Naomi's work is inspired by the sensuous curves and flowing curls of the Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau periods.
