GOING MY WAY 1944, Paramount Pictures, Dir: Leo McCarey
Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald star in 1944’s heartwarming American musical drama Going My Way. Produced and directed by Leo McCarey, the film precedes 1945’s The Bells of St. Mary’s, winning Crosby his first of two Academy Awards for Best Actor for his portrayal of Father O’Malley. Launching his role as unconventional Catholic priest, the easy-going Crosby finds himself at difficult odds with the elder pastor, Father Fitzgibbon (Fitzgerald), as they strive to put their differences aside in order to better attend to parish affairs at the St. Dominic’s Church in New York City. Nominated for ten Academy Awards, the film received seven Oscars including for Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Crosby), Best Supporting Actor (Fitzgerald) and Best Song (“Swinging on a Star”), there Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture and in 2004 was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Come see this remarkable pairing of song and script in a historic theater which would have featured this motion picture at the time of its 1944 debut. Runtime: 2 hours 6 minutes
