The 2025 Felabration (Fela Kuti's Birthday Celebration) will feature Aurelien Barnes and special guest Stanton Moore!
Gov't Majik, aka New Orleans' very own Dirty South Afro-Tech Arkestra, is bringing our annual Felabration to the Broadside this Thursday night, October 16th, 8-11pm. Gov't Majik marked our 20 year anniversary in 2025, and we've charted our own creative path through jazz, funk, rap and world music, but for this show we are digging all the way into our afro-beat roots to salute the great Fela Kuti! We are going to play all Fela, all night! For this one of kind, special show, we'll be fronted by the great Aurelien Barnes, who has demonstrated quite a command of singing Fela's songs. We'll also be joined by special guest Stanton Moore, who'll be joining our drummer Peter Varnado on double drums for the whole show. We'll also have Luke Quaranta from Toubab Krewe and Jafet Perez from Preservation Hall on percussion to be sure the time is tight. This list of great musicians goes on, but suffice to say, if you're a fan of Fela's you don't want to miss it! We'll have a light show/ projections by the one and only Optic Tempo and its also an all ages show. It's important to note, we intend to channel Fela, aka the Black President's, revolutionary spirit! Together lets strike a musical blow for the resistance! If you feel the world has become too heavy or the odds too stacked against freedom and equality, come listen, partake of the moment, and be assured that the strength of love, art and music are here to stay and stand in the face of tyranny! Together we make our future, let's let the music guide us! Let's do this!
