Grown-Up Camp: Women of Midtown
Join us on June 17 for a day about the women who built this city and the stories that almost didn't survive them.
Start the morning on foot with History Afoot Atlanta, walking through Midtown and meeting the women whose work shaped the neighborhood you're standing in -- Black domestic workers, labor activists, pink-collar pioneers who moved the city forward without ever getting credit for it.
Then spend the afternoon designing a memory -- making sure the stories nearest and dearest to you don't disappear the way so many others have. Guided by Stef Alicia McCalmon, you'll choose your subject and make something that holds her story. Written, illustrated, or both. Worth keeping for a long time.
What to Expect:
Price: $300 | All proceeds fund summer Design Camp scholarships for youth ages 6-18. Lunch is included.
Your Fearless Leaders:
Amy Durrell & History Afoot Atlanta -- Amy Durrell approaches history by examining landscapes to understand how people actually lived in them. Since leading her first walking tour in 1987, she has spent decades uncovering Atlanta's lesser-known stories -- particularly those of women, communities of color, and the overlooked architects of the city's civic life. She holds a Master of Heritage Preservation from Georgia State University, and is the co-founder of History Afoot Atlanta, which offers historian-led walking tours that expand Atlanta's narrative, fostering conversations about the diverse individuals who shaped the city.
Stef Alicia McCalmon -- For Stef Alicia, handwriting is where memory and identity meet. The force behind susielightyear studio, she is a cursive artist and educator whose signature handwritten aesthetic was inherited directly from her mother and maternal grandmother -- making every letter she forms an act of preservation as much as expression. Her workshops invite participants to be present with their personal, communal, cultural, and spiritual stories. She creates content and facilitates workshops to make cursive education more accessible, and believes that the act of writing by hand is itself a form of remembering.
