Description

Be a part of our first audience! Gumption! is ready for the next stage in its development—a readers’ theater style performance, with music. (Actors will be using scripts and singing to recorded music.) Enjoy an evening of laughter, song, adventure, and Colorado history, all inspired by the best-selling book, Nothing Daunted, by Dorothy Wickenden.

For those interested, an informal question/answer/discussion session will take place after the show. Handicap accessible. Script: Cheryl MIller Thurston. Music: Mike Perry and Cheryl Miller Thurston.

Tickets, only $5.00. We have kept ticket prices low since it's not a full stage production, but we do have expenses. Donations are optional, of course, but really appreciated! (There's a place for donations in the last screen as you check out.)

The story? In 1916 New York, two young society women are bored, very bored with their tedious, confining lives. At the same time, clear across the country, homesteading bachelors of Elkhead, Colorado, also have a problem: There are no women of marrying age in the rugged, remote area of the northern Colorado mountains.

What to do? They build an extraordinarily modern school, partly to attract cultured, educated young female teachers as prospective brides. Rosamond Underwood and Dorothy Woodruff leave New York to take on the job of teachers at the new school, where they encounter a world unlike anything they have known in their pampered lives. They experience the grueling hardships of a brutal winter and struggle to learn how to teach children who have had little or no experience with schooling—some so poor they don’t have warm clothing and must eat wild “skunk” cabbage to survive. As they learn to make their way, Ros and Dorothy draw inspiration from the strong women around them.

Soon Ros must sort out her feelings for two men who both fall in love with her. When one of them, the son of a mining magnate, is kidnapped, the incident makes headlines across the country.

Ros and Dorothy discover strengths they never knew they had as they bring the outside world to Elkhead. At the same time, the world they find in Elkhead changes their own lives forever.
