This film is a featured film in our Black History Month programming for February.
Warning: Hallelujah is among the first films to have an all-Black cast, and is ground-breaking as an early talking picture, the first for its director, who was nominated for an Oscar. It contains problematic prejudices which invite criticism. It is also seen as an incredibly progressive at the time of its production, and was banned in the South because of its content and production choices. It included an integrated film crew, a first in the industry. Some critics view it as having a "truth that was not attained again for thirty years," while others point out the negative stereotypes that set patterns for black characters for far longer. Available much more widely this year, Hallelujah is an important piece of film history presented as it was created, understanding that it is a product of its time.
