'Handel's Messiah Comes to Portsmouth' a lecture by George Burrows

  • March 14, 2026 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
  • Portsmouth Cathedral - Unreserved

    High Street
    Portsmouth, Hampshire PO1 2HA
Description

This talk traces a course from Handel's composition of Messiah in 1741 to grand performances staged in Portsmouth in the first decades of the 1800s.

Drawing on research of newspapers, diaries of local musicians, and materials discovered in the archives of the Portsmouth History Centre, Professor Burrows reveals a fascinating performance history of Messiah. It shows how Handel's versatile masterpiece flexed as fashions, practices and geographies changed and yet it remained powerfully meaningful to audiences in the provinces as much as in the capital.

Lecture by George Burrows - Professor of Music and Theatre, University of Portsmouth
