Hemingway Organ Concert Series - Hear History Come Alive
The Boise Baroque Orchestra is pleased to present the first of three intimate chamber music concerts at Boise State University’s historic Hemingway Center. This concert features organist Dr. Raphael Vogl along with members of Boise Baroque Orchestra in an ensemble performance.
About Dr. Raphael Vogl
German organist Dr. Raphael Attila Vogl began his musical education under the guidance of cathedral organist Ludwig Ruckdeschel in his hometown of Passau. At 18, he was admitted to the University of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg, where he studied Organ Performance and Church Music with Stefan Baier and Markus Rupprecht. He later continued his studies with László Fassang at the renowned Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
In 2020, Vogl completed his Master of Music degree in Organ Performance at The Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Grammy Award–winning organist Paul Jacobs. He subsequently entered Juilliard’s highly selective Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) program — widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and prestigious doctoral degrees in the performing arts in the United States — and earned his DMA in Organ Performance in 2026.
A prizewinner at several international competitions, Vogl has been recognized at the International Mendelssohn Organ Competition (Switzerland), the Tariverdiev International Organ Competition (Russia), and the World Bach Competition of the Boulder Bach Festival (USA). He made his Alice Tully Hall debut in 2020 with the New York premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s The Rider on the White Horse as part of Juilliard’s Focus Festival at Lincoln Center.
About the Hemingway Center Organ
Built in 1941 with WPA funding, the Hemingway Center—originally known as Assembly Hall—has been a gathering place for generations of Boise State students and the community. Concerts, performances, graduations, and celebrations have filled its walls for more than 80 years. In 1953, the building gained an extraordinary musical centerpiece: the Laura Moore Cunningham Memorial Organ, made possible by a gift from the Cunningham family.
With 2,631 pipes, 44 ranks, five divisions, three manuals, 35 stops, and 50 registers, the organ is a remarkable instrument for exploring the music of the Baroque—the period widely regarded as the Golden Age of the organ. During this era, innovations such as the pedalboard and stop controls gave composers and performers an unprecedented palette of sound and expression.
Few composers understood these possibilities better than J.S. Bach, whose intricate counterpoint and powerful musical architecture continue to define the sound of the Baroque organ.

With the help of his clever servant Pedrillo, he sets a daring escape plan in motion. But inside the palace, personalities clash, loyalties shift, and authority is constantly tested. As carefully laid plans begin to falter, wit and compassion reshape the outcome. Control slowly unravels as mercy and humanity prove stronger than pride and power.
