Description

The art of Henna (also called "mehndi" in South Asia) has been practiced in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years. Henna is a natural dye that is used for making temporary tattoos on skin for decorative purposes, although it is also known to have certain medicinal properties.

In this class, we will learn how to hold a Henna cone, make some simple strokes and patterns on paper and practice some traditional forms (such as paisleys) as we gain confidence. Once we have finalized our design, we will draw a simple tattoo on on our hands.

All materials are provided. This class is recommended for students 18 and up.

Note: For this class, we will be using pure, unadulterated Henna without any additives. Henna, to which commercial dyes have not been added, dyes to a gentle orange-brownish hue and lasts anywhere between 3-10 days.

Saya Karkare (she/her) grew up in India where picked up her first Henna cone at the age of 5 and has been drawing Henna tattoos ever since.
