The Asheville Museum of History (AMoH) is excited to announce a community partner Hike with a Historian program with Wayne Caldwell at Cataloochee Valley.
Step outside the walls of the museum and walk directly into Appalachian history!
Join the Asheville Museum of History for an exclusive, day-long guided excursion through the stunning and storied Cataloochee Valley. Experience history firsthand alongside local author Wayne Caldwell, who brought this valley to life in his acclaimed novel, Cataloochee.
Uncover the rich heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains as we tour 19th-century homesteads, the schoolhouse, and the historic church.
ALSO... This area is great for spotting elk—keep your eyes open!
Details:
When: Friday, October 9th
Time: 9:30 AM – 5 PM [est. tour start & end time]
Meet [2 Options for attendees]:
Option 1 | 8:30 AM at Asheville Museum of History; we will carpool to Cataloochee Valley
Option 2 | est. 9:30 AM at Cataloochee Valley Overlook; when all parties have arrived, we will caravan to Cataloochee Valley
* Hike Length/Difficulty: ~ 1 Mile | Moderate | Gravel, Grass, Dirt Paths
* We will drive from stop to stop *

Cataloochee Overlook
Palmer House
Beech Grove School House
Caldwell Place & Barn
What to Bring:
Hiking Poles
Bug spray and any needed medications.
Water and packed lunch (and snacks); blanket or camp chair for lunch
Closed-toed, sturdy shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
Rain Date: In the event of inclement weather, participants will be notified in advance if the event is to be rescheduled or canceled. If rescheduled, an alternate rain date will be announced promptly.
Tickets:
AMoH Members | $50 [plus fees & taxes]
General Admission | $60 [plus fees & taxes]
We also have no-cost, community-funded tickets available for each event. We want our events to be accessible to as many people as possible. If you are able, please consider making a donation along with your ticket purchase. These donations are placed in our Community Fund, which allows us to offer tickets at no cost to those who would otherwise be unable to attend.
Waiver & Emergency Contact Form:
All registrants must fill out the waiver & emergency contact form in advance. Registrants will receive a waiver & emergency contact form after registering for the program or will receive and sign a waiver & emergency contact form upon arrival on the day of the program.
Hike Leader/s:
This outing is led by Steven Nickollof, AMoH Director of Programs. Steven has an MA in American history and is interested in both Appalachian and environmental history. He is also Wilderness First Aid/CPR certified.
