Description

Celebrate National Great Outdoors Month by joining Stratford Hall’s Director of Landscapes, Matt Peterschmidt, for an insightful talk on 18th-century landscapes and a guided tour of Stratford Hall’s historic gardens.

Come for a lecture in the Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library at Stratford Hall beginning at 10am, then take a casual walking tour of the grounds and gardens that surround the Great House of Stratford Hall. This lecture and tour will look at the past, present, and future of the landscape around the nearly 300-year-old Great House. Learn of the different influences that have shaped the landscape from before the Lee family's ownership up until present day.

Visitors can expect long periods of walking and standing during the tour and to encounter uneven brick and gravel pathways. Part of this experience is outdoors, so please dress for the weather, bring sunscreen, and a bottle of water.

Limited spaces are available and advance registration is required.

Stratford Hall Historic Preserve

Stratford Hall brings together people from around the world to experience two-thousand acres of natural and human history, preserved and presented so that we can all learn from the courageous struggles of our ancestors, taking inspiration both from what they endured and what they accomplished. There are few places in America where people can travel down small, rural roads to arrive at a vast site that preserves so many aspects of early-American life, from the Great House where the influential Lee family helped to forge a new nation, to the fields worked by enslaved Africans, to the waters of the rivers that fueled trade, to the ground, which still yields secrets about the people and animals that lived before.

Come experience this extraordinary place and learn about a layered history that began millions of years ago - a history that continues to educate, inspire, and influence Americans to the present day.
