Purpose and overview of Clark's story:
“The Greatest Speech in U.S. History: Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address,” an original story by Clark Musser of Oklahoma City. Pulitzer Prize winning historian, Garry Wills, tells us the Gettysburg Address has the “words that remade America.” Other scholars proclaim the Gettysburg Address marks the second founding of America, while others say more simply—yet, with equal profundity—it is the greatest speech in U.S. history. The purpose of my story is to help us understand why such accolades are deserved. To do so, we will discuss Lincoln’s abhorrence of the enslavement of our fellow men, women and children, and his belief the purpose of the Civil War must be expanded beyond his original objective of preserving the Union, as he was sworn by his presidential oath of office to do. By the time of the Gettysburg Address, which was two and a half years into the war, the president had concluded that our nation’s founding principles of liberty and equality must be extended to everyone. If they are not, democracy will perish from the earth.
