The story of folk healing in Western North Carolina is regionally idiosyncratic and part of a grander narrative in the evolution of healthcare in America and Appalachian identity. Folk healing and folk medicine include practices outside Western medicine: herbs and plants, superstitions, and faith healing. Although the tradition of folk healing is not unique to southern Appalachia, over time it has become a component of Appalachian culture and stereotypes. This talk presents an overview of the representations of Appalachianness and how they relate to medicinal folkways in Western North Carolina.

About the Speaker:

Emily Baker grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, and attended UNCA where she received her Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Art History. She received her Master’s in American History from Western Carolina University and simultaneously worked at the Mountain Heritage Center, where she discovered her love of Appalachian culture and folklore. Since finishing school, she has worked in museums including Old Salem Museums and Gardens as Program Coordinator for Humanities, Medicine, and Science and Reynolda House Museum of American Art as Manager of Community and Academic Learning, both in Winston Salem. She spends as much time as possible hiking in the mountains, listening to music, and learning how to make primitive weapons.
