Description
Join us on Tuesday, March 18th, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Asheville Museum of History (AMoH) for a special History Hour program: "Bringing Wilma Dykeman's Work and Words to New Generations" with local author Shannon Hitchcock and guest Jim Stokely. Light refreshments will be available.
Together, Shannon Hitchcock and Jim Stokely will discuss the work and legacy of Wilma Dykeman. Dykeman, whose writing and efforts to preserve the French Broad River helped shape the area we know and love, was an early advocate for the environment and social justice. Then, Shannon will discuss her children's book, Of Words & Water: The Story of Wilma Dykeman — Writer, Historian, Environmentalist and the process of working with an illustrator to bring the woman and her contributions to life on the page.
About the Speakers:
Shannon Hitchcock was born in North Carolina and grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She is the author of five middle grade novels, Flying Over Water, One True Way, Ruby Lee & Me, The Ballad of Jessie Pearl, and her latest, Dancing in the Storm, written with Amie Darnell Specht. Of Words & Water is the fourth book in her storyteller series, along with Saving Granddaddy’s Stories, about Ray Hicks; She Sang for the Mountains, about Jean Ritchie; and Story Quilts. Shannon currently lives in Western North Carolina where she can see the mountains every day.
Jim Stokely began his career by writing brochures and handbooks for the National Park Service, then served as director of a major National Endowment for the Humanities project called “An Appalachian Experience.” Following 25 years as a Human Resources consultant and director, Jim returned to full-time writing. Jim is President of the Wilma Dykeman Legacy and has written and edited numerous books.
