About the History Hour | Documentary:

Every neighborhood has a story. Some are written in history books, while others live in the memories of those who called them home.

Stumptown is a documentary that explores the rich history, cultural identity, and the legacy of Asheville's historically Black communities of Stumptown, Hill Street, and Montford.

Through interviews, personal reflections, and intergenerational storytelling, the documentary brings to life the people, places, and experiences that shaped the neighborhood. From the strength of community connections, to the challenges of urban development, displacement, and changing landscapes, Stumptown examines what happens when the physical spaces of a community change, but its stories and spirit remain.

At its heart, the documentary is more than a historical account. It is a celebration of Black resilience, belonging, and the power of preserving our own narratives.

Preserving history isn't just about remembering where we came from. It's about ensuring future generations know who was here, what they built, and why their stories matter.

About the Speaker:

Elizabeth Lashay Garland is a storyteller, creative producer, and founder of STM Multimedia, Slay the Mic, and Slay the Mic University. Her passion for storytelling is rooted in her love for people, community, and the stories that too often go untold. Stumptown: Rooted in Legacy marks her documentary directorial debut, bringing her commitment to preserving history, amplifying voices to the screen, creating spaces for intergenerational conversations.

Through a meaningful collaboration with Ami Worthen and Rasheeda Hall, Elizabeth Lashay discovered the power of collective storytelling. “This project reminded me that storytelling is never something we do alone; it takes people who care deeply about the community and understand the importance of preserving its history.” Through her directorial debut, Elizabeth Lashay hopes to remind audiences that some of the most powerful stories aren't found in history books. They're carried by the people who lived them.
