Description

Join us on Tuesday, February 25th, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Asheville Museum of History (AMoH) for a special History Hour program, Echoes of Texana: The Families That Made it a Community, with LaKisha Blount. Light refreshments will be available.

The presentation will introduce attendees to the impact that Texana McClelland and other families had in founding the largest African American community in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

About the Speaker:

LaKisha Blount, a skilled oil painter, delves deep into the intricate layers of her heritage to create art that resonates with both history and emotion. As a descendant of Texana McClelland, the namesake of the Texana Community established in 1841, Blount draws inspiration from her rich familial roots and the profound impact of her ancestors.

Her artistic process is a testament to her unique approach. With deft strokes of a palette knife, Blount adds and removes layers of paint, each stroke a deliberate exploration of color and texture. It is in the delicate act of scratching away these layers that hidden hues and moods emerge, revealing stories waiting to be told.

Blount's work is a reflection of her Affrilachian experience—a term coined to encompass African American heritage within the Appalachian region. Rooted in family narratives and the historical significance of her community, her paintings speak volumes about resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of those who came before her.

In each stroke, Blount weaves together the threads of her lineage, infusing her art with a profound sense of place and belonging. Her pieces serve as both a tribute to her ancestors and a testament to the power of art in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. Through her evocative compositions, LaKisha Blount invites viewers to embark on a journey through time, where the past and present intertwine in a mesmerizing tapestry of color and emotion.
