Description
Join us on Tuesday, February 24th, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Asheville Museum of History (AMoH) for a special History Hour program: James Vester Miller: Asheville's Artist in Brick, with Anne Callison Stokely. Light refreshments will be available.
About the History Hour Program:
James Vester Miller (1860-1940) built many of Asheville's most remarkable historic brick buildings during its Golden Age of the late 19th and early 20th century, yet he remains largely unknown. Born into slavery and self-taught, his artistry and craftsmanship were sought out by Asheville's leading architects, including Richard Sharp Smith, the supervising architect of the Biltmore House. Come learn more about his life story, as well as about the James Vester Miller Walking Trail created by his granddaughter, Andrea Clark.
About the Speaker:
Anne Callison Stokely is a writer/editor who grew up in Asheville before extensive urban renewal destroyed much of the East End and other Black neighborhoods in Asheville. She became good friends with Andrea Clark when she and her husband, Jim Stokely, returned to their Asheville roots in retirement. Anne worked with Andrea to create the footprint and brochure for the James Vester Miller Walking Trail, which was publicly launched in 2021.
