HOUSE BLEND II:

a double bill with:

Skylighght, a collaborative duet composed and performed by Gelsey Bell (voice) and Erin Rogers (saxophone). An intimate search for a sonic and physical meeting of voice and saxophone, Bell and Rogers direct the sound in pathways that dance around the room, some sections responding to the architectural properties of the performance space, others pairing singer and saxophone to create novel acoustic effects.

In the final movement, “Building Canyons,” Bell sings into the bell of Rogers’s tenor saxophone, exploring its inner chamber and sounding an extraordinary rainbow of diverse multiphonics and harmonic partials.

Skylighght was released on Chaiken Records on May 10, with a launch party in the catacombs at Green-Wood cemetery in Brooklyn.

Patrick Higgins (guitar, drums, electronics) latest record, a double LP called ‘Versus’ on Nicolás Jaar’s Other People label, was released on July 12 on Nicolás Jaar’s Other People records.

Higgins will thread new improvisations for guitar and electronics through live renditions of "Versus", "Antinome", "In Situ", "Sirocco" and "Aporia" from Versus, his latest record. Available now from Other People records -- https://stem.ffm.to/patrickhigginsversus

This album marks a new direction and development of Higgins’ acclaimed work as a guitarist and composer, drawing on electronic music, free improvisation, and avant-garde modern composition, ‘Versus’ is a highly emotional and expressive work that pushes Higgins’ own instrumental virtuosity into new territories. He performs guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, drums and laptop programming across a 9-track record that traverses and transforms many aspects of Higgins’ earlier work.

The title track ‘Versus’ was premiered at Monom Studios in Berlin, in a configuration for 75 surround-sound speakers. Combining composed and written elements with highly-focused lyrical improvisations, ‘Versus’ shows Higgins at his best—bridging styles and innovating new music that is harsh while seductive, intense while inviting, and always unexpected.

The recording is itself a stunning achievement of electro-acoustics, beautifully created organic immersive stereo-scapes where instruments and electronics become indistinguishable, hi-fi audio at its best and most innovative. (Headphones or high quality speakers are recommended.) The tracks ‘Sirocco’ and ‘Catalyst’ feature Bobby Previte on percussion, and the song ‘Little One’ finds Higgins in collaboration with trumpeter Chris Williams.

‘Versus’ is a record that engages the turbulent oppositions of our time, both external and internal conflicts, with a strongly expressive and suggestive style—proposing resolutions and ways out, but never resolving into easy answers. At once structurally complex and deeply emotional, it is a radical statement from an increasingly mature artist in full command of his talents. Other People is proud to present Higgins’ latest solo record.

“Patrick Higgins composes with a scholar’s historical perspective and a punk’s sense of abandon” —Pitchfork

“One of the prime movers of the avant-garde”—The New Yorker

“A pioneer of modern experimental music”—East Village Radio

About PS21

A vibrant center for contemporary performance in the Hudson Valley, PS21 “presents work that challenges and invites” (The New York Times): adventurous productions by leading and emerging American and international artists in music, dance, and theater, and visionaries creating entirely new genres. On our open-air Pavilion Theater stage, across our expansive, unspoiled grounds, and in the diverse surrounding communities, PS21 cultivates and presents productions that transcend aesthetic boundaries and revitalize existing artistic languages and grammars. Throughout the year, we host developmental residencies for dancers, musicians, actors, and creators of original, even unclassifiable new work. Rooted in community collaboration, PS21’s programming engages creatively with critical global and social issues. It is a mecca for innovative and original artistic voices, a destination for performance that can be experienced nowhere else in the region. PS21’s Pavilion Theater is a green-energy marvel surrounded by 100 acres of unspoiled meadows, trails, and woodlands that are a haven to wildlife and visitors across the region.  Integrated into our unspoiled campus, the theater embodies our commitments to the public: open, inviting, and optimized for their enjoyment and encouraging citizen expression and participation.
