Mission

A choral community celebrating and connecting people through the power of music inspiring, uplifting, and educating.

Dr. Ara Carapeytan and his wife Cherrie, founded The Houston Oratorio Society in 1986, now known as the Houston Masterworks Chorus. Although our name has changed, our mission has remained faithful to musically connect with the community, broaden our knowledge of singing genres, and expand our reach to include other cultures. We could not have imagined that HMC would be on the vanguard of choral singing or that Houston would become such a constant supporter of our mission.

Historically, HMC has weathered oil booms and busts, natural disasters, 9/11, local financial crises and a global pandemic. Each event gave us the opportunity to recreate and collaborate with skilled community artists of all ages, backgrounds, and musical experiences. We have performed choral masterpieces in alternative spaces with professional dancers, composers, artists, musicians, and poets from around the world.

The unwavering dedication of our leaders and members has ensured our mission to educate, inspire and uplift. Seeking excellence is our constant, motivating force.

We would not be who we are today without our coveted artistic leadership. Director Bob Brewer developed our insights into the great masterworks. Craig Hella Johnson explored contemporary composers, broadened our audiences and increased our donors and sponsors. Tom Jaber led us to Carnegie Hall, New York City and abroad to Australia and Italy. Recently appointed in 2019, Dr. Paulo Gomes introduces us to new partnerships and new music. And, in December of 2021 directs the chorus in Hawaii at the 80th Anniversary Commemoration of Pearl Harbor.

We welcome singers to join our chorus, volunteers to serve at our events, and leaders to join our board with their time, talent, and treasure.

We appreciate your support. Reach out for a conversation if you’re interested in exploring the joy and excitement of live choral music.
