This Jane’s Walk, taking place in Downtown near Centennial Park, focuses on themes of Advocacy, Art & Architecture, History & Culture.
Join civil rights, urban planning, and sports enthusiast Andrew Feldman for a walk that highlights significant relationships in Atlanta's history. Discover how In 1966, the Milwaukee Braves became the first professional baseball team in the Deep South, thanks to the efforts of two Jewish dentists during Atlanta's mayoral election. Learn how Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., who campaigned for economic development and racial equality, played a key role in bringing the Braves, as well as the Atlanta Falcons and Hawks, to the city.
The Jane’s Walk will start at the Ivan Allen memorial in Centennial Park, move to the Goldstein brothers’ American Hotel, and end at the Muhammed Yungai mural “New Kids on the Block.” Along the way discuss the Braves’ relocation and the civil rights implications of the key figures involved.
About the Walk Leader
Andrew Feldman’s interest in Jane Jacobs came from his time growing up in New York. Feldman studied urban planning and development in college, interning with the NYC Department of City Planning. Since then he’s worked in education and non-profit, currently with a sports association in metro Atlanta, where he’s lived the last eight years. Andrew loves how the Jane's Walk initiative allows "everyday" citizens to share their pet interests with others who may be interested, and his topic for 2025 combines with his interests in civil rights, urban planning and sports!
About Jane’s Walk
Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival honoring the legacy of urbanist, activist, and writer Jane Jacobs with free, citizen-led walking tours through the neighborhoods that lend so much character to our cities.
The festival promotes civic engagement and encourages leaders and participants to share stories about their communities and use walking as a means of connecting with their neighbors.
Location
- Begin: START: across the street from the Omni Atlanta Hotel in Centennial Park (intersection of Marietta St and Andrew Young Intl Blvd) at the Ivan Allen memorial just inside Centennial Park entrance. Paid parking available nearby as well as the GWCC/CNN MARTA station is close by (transit is recommended, as this Jane's Walk ends at a different location). We will meet up at the Ivan Allen memorial.
- End: Intersection of Luckie and Forsyth, at the mural "New Kids on the Block" overlooking a parking lot. It is two blocks from the Central Library and the Peachtree Center MARTA station.

- What to Bring: Consider bringing a bottle of water and hat/sunglasses, depending on the weather - and maybe an umbrella. This walk will be mostly outdoors.
