Proudly representing Hawaiʻi, Roots By Design is an original roots reggae band built on family, friendship, and island culture. Four of our members have deep roots on the Big Island—three were born and raised there Lead Guitarist/vocalist/producer Kellen Shea Hilo, Vocalist/Media/Percussionist Pono Joe, also Drummer/Soundengineer Ryan Boi Big Island boys! and for our frontman HUMBLESOULJAH, born and raised Maui but the connection runs even deeper. His parents, grandparents, and generations before them all come from the legendary town of Honokaʻa, carrying forward the values of aloha, humility, and respect that shape our music today.
And we can’t forget our Samoan bradda, Jimmy hammer bassy, whose heart, energy, and island spirit complete the family. Different backgrounds, one mission—bringing people together through authentic roots reggae.
Roots By Design was formed from a shared love for live music, conscious lyrics, and the timeless sound of reggae. Rather than chasing trends, we write songs that come from real-life experiences—love, struggle, faith, family, unity, and island living. Every performance is about creating a positive vibe where everyone feels welcome, whether you’ve been listening to reggae your whole life or you’re hearing us for the first time.
Our sound blends classic roots reggae with Hawaiian and Polynesian influences, creating music that honors the foundation while bringing our own style and story. From soulful melodies to uplifting rhythms, every song is written with purpose and performed from the heart.
For us, this journey is bigger than music. It’s about representing where we come from, honoring those who came before us, and sharing the spirit of Hawaiʻi wherever we play.
