Improving Flow, Transitions, and Variety in Self-Suspension
A workshop with Parker RopeBoi
So you can suspend yourself in the air—what next? Maybe you even can flip back and forth between a few different positions, but what else is possible?
This class is *not* an intro to self-suspension. This class is for people who have some self-suspension experience and are seeking to expand the range of possibilities in the air during their self-suspensions. Parker, known for highly dynamic self-suspensions performances with dozens of fluid transitions, will share some of their best tips and techniques for improving flow, transitions, and variety in self-suspensions.
Rather than teaching a pre-determined transition series, this class teaches skills and techniques that participants can use to expand their range of positions and transitions in self-suspension, experiment with and improvise transitions in the air, and develop their own interesting, and individually suitable transition series. Specific topics addressed include: the nuances of arranging relative suspension line heights, carabiner and ring positions, in-air line management, effectively using swivels and spinning to apply forces and enable different body positions, gauging and exploring one's range of motion, controlling speed of transitions, and smoothly unjamming rope jams. Part of the class will cover self-suspension skill training exercises in proprioception and body mechanics that participants can use to continue to develop and refine their self-suspension skills. Topics and techniques will be geared towards participants’ specific interests/questions.
Prerequisites: Self-suspension experience—as a rough approximation of the appropriate skill level, let’s say participants should have completed unassisted self-suspensions (i.e. tied and fully suspended themselves, stayed in the air for at least a couple of minutes, and brought themselves down to the floor and untied, without anyone else touching the ropes or giving advice on what to do) at least 8-10 times, and have self-suspended in a minimum of two different positions. “Foundations of Self-Suspension” class strongly encouraged so students have the knowledge of the fundamental ties and guiding principles of Parker RopeBoi’s self-suspension style.
