Description

Program Overview

Inspired Aging is a free multi-session studio art course for adults 55+. Courses are led by professional teaching artists who utilize the museum's collection as a stimulus for art-making experiences. Teaching artists guide participants to create artwork that will be showcased in a culminating event at the museum. These courses are designed to offer lifelong learning through the arts and serve older adults who have an interest in exploring creative expression in a social group setting. Courses are free but space is limited, so registration is required.

These free courses are made possible by the generous support of E.A. Michelson Philanthropy. Many thanks for our partners at Creative Aging and the City of Memphis Parks Senior Centers.

Mixed Media Course

Beginners welcome! In this 8-week course, participants will explore a variety of mediums through which collage and assemblage art can be created. Participants will view artworks from well known past and current practicing collage and abstraction artists from the Brooks’ collection or special exhibition and use those works to inform their own designs. Assemblage materials may include: pictures, fabrics, papers, textiles, yarn, string, netting, small found objects like keys, shells, metal and wood pieces, fake plants, random small trinkets, as well as paints and glues. The course will conclude with the creation of a final piece that expresses a story about a place of significance.

Classes will meet at the Brooks, 1934 Poplar Ave., on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm on 5/8; 5/15; 5/22; 5/29; 6/5; 6/12; 6/20; 6/26

A culminating event will be hosted on July 6, 2024 at 2:00pm.
