Description

Discover new ways of seeing yourself—piece by piece. In The Self-Portrait: Part to Whole / Whole to Part, participants will create a dynamic, evolving self-portrait over the course of eight sessions, using a mix of materials such as watercolor, collage, and colored pencil.

Led in partnership with artist Lurlynn Franklin, each class includes demonstrations that introduce fresh techniques and creative approaches. You’ll build your portrait gradually, exploring how individual elements—facial features, textures, and colors—come together to form a cohesive whole. Whether you’re new to art-making or returning to a longtime passion, this class offers a supportive space to experiment, reflect, and create. No experience required, all materials provided.

Classes meet once per week on Fridays from 1:30-3:30. Full class dates are as follows: 4/3, 4/10/ 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15, and 5/22.

These free courses are made possible by the generous support of E.A. Michelson Philanthropy, the H.W. Durham Foundation, and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Many thanks for our partners at Creative Aging and the City of Memphis Parks Senior Centers.
