Description

Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), developed by Cohen, Mannarino, and Deblinger (2006) is an empirically-supported treatment approved by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for trauma (i.e., sexual or physical abuse, natural disaster), A strength of TF-CBT is that it incorporates several components that address domains of the child’s psychological functioning in a systematic manner.  The components of TF-CBT are: Psychoeducation, Parenting Skills, Relaxation, Affective Expression and Modulation, Describing the Cognitive Triangle, The Trauma Narrative and Processing of the Narrative, In Vivo Mastery, Parent-Child Sessions, and Enhancing Future Safety.  Play therapy addresses each of the TF-CBT components in a developmentally appropriate way that is engaging and allows communication through the child’s language of play. Play therapists, understanding the healing powers of play, have created structured techniques that can be integrated into the components of TF-CBT. This presentation will compromise therapists and opportunity to learn about how TF-CBT and Play Therapy are an ideal match and considerations for implementing it in practice.

1. Describe the theoretical framework of Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

2.  List the components of play therapy utilizing TF-CBT.

3, Describe and utilize structured play therapy interventions to enhance future safety.

4. List at least three relaxation strategies for children with trauma histories.

5. Describe how children develop affect expression and modulation and how play therapy can assist in development.
