National Theater of Portugal

A Festival d'Avignon Production

International Theater by Tiago Rodrigues (Portugal)

July 5 & 6, 8 pm, PS21 Pavilion Theater

In Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists, by Tiago Rodrigues, playwright/director and current Director of Festival d’Avignon, a Portuguese family annually commemorates the murder of activist Catarina Eufémia during the Salazar dictatorship by killing a fascist. But this year, the young woman chosen to carry out the ritual refuses: Can violence lead to justice? What if the killing isn’t an act of resistance, but merely a crime?

“The world of fiction, in which I still believe as a theater artist, allows certain things that aren’t possible in politics. Like this completely absurd and truly awful question, “Should the fascist be killed or not?” Only the theater can create a context in which that question exists.”

Since he started as an actor 20 years ago, Tiago Rodrigues has always looked at the theater as a human assembly: a place where people meet, as if in a café , to confront their thoughts and share their time. His work has been recognized for his gift for dismantling the borders between the theater and different realities, challenging our perception of social and historical phenomena. Throughout his career, Tiago Rodrigues has become a builder of bridges between cities and countries and an advocate of a living theater.

About PS21

A vibrant center for contemporary performance in the Hudson Valley, PS21 “presents work that challenges and invites” (The New York Times): adventurous productions by leading and emerging American and international artists in music, dance, and theater, and visionaries creating entirely new genres. On our open-air Pavilion Theater stage, across our expansive, unspoiled grounds, and in the diverse surrounding communities, PS21 cultivates and presents productions that transcend aesthetic boundaries and revitalize existing artistic languages and grammars. Throughout the year, we host developmental residencies for dancers, musicians, actors, and creators of original, even unclassifiable new work. Rooted in community collaboration, PS21’s programming engages creatively with critical global and social issues. It is a mecca for innovative and original artistic voices, a destination for performance that can be experienced nowhere else in the region. PS21’s Pavilion Theater is a green-energy marvel surrounded by 100 acres of unspoiled meadows, trails, and woodlands that are a haven to wildlife and visitors across the region.  Integrated into our unspoiled campus, the theater embodies our commitments to the public: open, inviting, and optimized for their enjoyment and encouraging citizen expression and participation.
