Description

Intro to Linocut Printmaking

Linocut is a relief printmaking technique where a design is carved into a linoleum block, the raised surface is inked, and the block is pressed onto paper, fabric, or other material. The carved-away areas stay blank while the raised lines and shapes pick up ink, so the design comes through in reverse, bold lines, fine details, and whatever textures the carver chooses to leave behind. It's an accessible entry point into printmaking that doesn't require a press or a fully equipped studio, just a block, a carving tool, and some ink.

This workshop provides everything needed for carving: linoleum blocks, carving tools, and guidance on technique and design transfer. Paper and cards will also be provided for printing finished designs.

Anyone with something specific in mind to print on is welcome to bring it along, extra paper, a notebook to personalize, or fabric and clothing to upcycle: a tote bag, a worn-in t-shirt, a tea towel, or anything else ready for a new design.

Participants will leave with their own carved linocut block, ready to use again and again, along with a working knowledge of materials and process for continuing to print at home long after the workshop ends.
