The PASSING workshop builds upon the Introduction to SRV course by providing a hands-on experience with actual human service programs. This training is designed to help participants gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and of how the promotion of valued social roles may enable access to “the good things of life.” The workshop is directed at anyone who is interested in bringing about change in the lives of devalued people, including families, human service workers and managers, service users, students, advocates, board members, and others. More info: srv-sotg.ca Prerequisite: Full attendance at a multi-day SRV workshop (typically a 3 or 4 days in person, 8-9 virtual sessions). Details required upon registration.
Most of the course work is completed in small teams guided by a Team Leader. Each teams visits two different human services, a residential program and a day service. Following each visit, the team uses the PASSING manual to consider how the program contributes (or impedes) the development of valued social roles. There are plenary sessions at the beginning and end of the workshop. All participants must have their own PASSING manual
Participants must book their own accommodation at Seneca College (Newnham Campus). Each newly renovated suite includes two separate bedrooms, and a shared kitchenette and bathroom. Cost: SOTG promo rate $129.95 + tax per suite, per night. Reserve early, suites book up quickly. CLICK to book accommodation .Parking is available at the residence.
Participants are responsible for their own food. There are many food options on campus.
The workshop is offered in an intensive format, beginning on Sunday evening and ending mid-afternoon Friday, involving evening sessions each day. Given the nature of the service visits and teamwork, participants can expect to begin each day by or before 8:00 am and work well into the evening (approx. 9-10pm). We cannot be entirely precise about finishing times as this is dictated by the task itself and team process.
TYPICAL SCHEDULE (this may vary depending on specific practicum sites and travel time)
Sunday evening: Opening plenary providing an overview of PASSING and the workshop. Brief team meeting teams for introductions and orientation to the week's schedule.
Monday morning: Team meeting to prepare for the first site practicum visit, which is a residential service. The team will visit the service for approximately 6-7 hours, which may include joining service recipients for a meal. After returning from the visit, the team as some initial work to do to prepare for Tuesday.
Tuesday: All day working in teams to apply the PASSING tool.
Wednesday: Second practicum visit to a day service, which begins around 8am. This visit follows that same structure as Monday. The teams go straight into teamwork when they return from the site.
Thursday: All day working in teams to apply the PASSING tool.
Friday: Wrap up team meeting. Closing plenary including presentations about the learning from all practicum visits.
SPECIAL NOTE: This workshop sets high expectations for participants. Team work, flexibility, and an open mind are a must. It requires an extensive commitment of one's time and energy, and a willingness to apply ones self to the task at hand. The full workshop days will be very long, involving teamwork and discussion sessions lasting into the late night. Thus, participants are advised to arrive well rested and free from outside distractions. It should be noted that most participants in previous PASSING workshops remark that these are among the more demanding workshops they have attended, but express little dissatisfaction with that fact, and instead appreciate the workshop's rigor and high level of engagement.
Consequently, participants should advise associates, employees, family members and relevant others that the demands of the workshop will necessarily mean that participants will, for all practical purposes, be unavailable for other activities for the entire week. You will not have time to do other work and should not plan to attempt to do so. No one should register for this workshop who plans to miss part of it.
