The Jefferson Ballet Theatre: A Tradition of Excellence

Founded in August 1995, the Jefferson Ballet Theatre began as a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation for classical ballet. Since its inception, it has played a vital role in enriching the cultural fabric of the region through professional performances and impactful educational programs.

Over the years, Jefferson Ballet Theatre has earned a respected place within the broader ballet community, known for presenting high-quality productions and hosting acclaimed guest artists from around the world. It offers a unique and exciting opportunity for aspiring dancers to train and perform alongside seasoned professionals.

A key component of its mission is dance education. The company regularly invites internationally renowned teachers, choreographers, and dancers to lead master classes, which are open to the public and help deepen the community’s engagement with the art form.

Under the artistic leadership of founder Myra Mier, the company established a strong foundation rooted in rigorous technique and artistic excellence. Her high standards led the company to new heights in both artistic achievement and audience attendance.

Jefferson Ballet Theatre premiered its first performances of The Nutcracker in December 1995, with eight shows in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, and St. Charles Parish. For the next fifteen years, The Nutcracker became an annual holiday tradition. Spring performances featured original works such as The Little Mermaid and Hansel and Gretel, along with popular Gala events.

In the summer of 2011, Myra Mier retired to spend more time with her growing family. Her long-time associate, Kenneth Beck, and his wife, Kimberly Matulich-Beck—a celebrated ballerina and respected instructor—stepped into the roles of co-directors. They are committed to upholding the company’s legacy while guiding it into an exciting new era.

Reflecting the structure and expectations of today’s professional ballet companies, Jefferson Ballet Theatre offers classes based on the Vaganova syllabus and the Cecchetti method. Students are challenged in a supportive environment that nurtures both discipline and artistic growth.

The 2011–2012 season marked a fresh chapter for the company, emphasizing innovation and diversity. The Winter Concert debuted three original contemporary works: Le Triomphe de l’Amour (choreographed by Gayle Parmelee), The Skaters’ Waltz, and an hour-long adaptation of The Snow Queen. In contrast, the Spring Concert celebrated classical repertoire with performances of Pas de Quatre, Le Jardin (from Le Corsaire), and Act II of Giselle.

Jefferson Ballet Theatre receives operating support from the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the Arts Council of New Orleans. These grants have enabled performances across Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and East Baton Rouge Parishes, and have supported collaborations with artists from the United States, Poland, Cuba, France, Russia, and, most recently, the Republic of Georgia.
