The critic and museum director sit down for a wide-ranging discussion about the utility and purpose of art museums today.
The conversation will cover the art itself, in addition to money, power, taste, the strange state of the art world, and what the New Museum can do that other museums can’t. Gioni is a brilliant curator, a master of the group show, and one of the funniest people in the art world. Expect Saltz to ask him everything you’re not supposed to ask a museum director.
After their conversation, guests will have the chance to pose their own questions to Saltz and Gioni before exploring the New Museum until 9 p.m.
Jerry Saltz is the senior art critic at New York, having joined the staff in 2007. His writing ranges from columns to cover stories, including April’s “My Lost Art World,” his remembrance of the 1990s New York art scene for the magazine’s annual “Yesteryear” issue. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2018. He is the author of several books, including How to Be an Artist, Art Is Life, and Seeing Out Loud: The Village Voice Art Columns, 1998–2003.
Massimiliano Gioni is the Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum, overseeing the museum’s artistic direction and operations. He first joined the museum as a curator in 2006, later becoming Director of Special Exhibitions and Associate Director. Gioni served as the New Museum’s Edlis Neeson Artistic Director for more than a decade, leading the exhibition program and playing a crucial role in the OMA-designed expansion of the museum’s home on the Bowery.
