Shawn Camp and Jim Rooney, two legends of Bluegrass and Americana music, get together for a song swap to remember Thursday, April 18, 7:30pm, at The Parlor Room, Northampton, MA.

If a musician is to be judged by the company they keep, few could provide a list with names such as those who have employed Shawn Camp as a singer/songwriter/session musician/band member/producer: Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, John Prine, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Cowboy Jack Clement, Jerry Douglas, Al Anderson (NRBQ), Jim Lauderdale, John Carter Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and, notably here, Jim Rooney.  As a bluegrass singer with the Grammy winning Earls Of Leicester, he has twice been named IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year. As a multi-instrumentalist sideman, he has toured with Alan Jackson, Shelby Lynne, Trisha Yearwood, the Osborne Brothers and played on countless Nashville sessions. As a writer, he has penned a slew of mainstream country hits, was nominated in 2023 for the NSAI Hall Of Fame, was shown in PBS American Masters series co-writing with Loretta Lynn, had two cuts including the title on a recent Willie Nelson studio album, co-wrote a song cycle, including “Magnolia Wind”, with the late Guy Clark. Shawn also received Grammys for the last record with Guy and the Tribute album to him, both of which he co-produced. As a stand-alone artist, he fronts his own band of super pickers which routinely sells out Nashville clubs. What all these “famous” people have recognized is that Shawn Camp doesn’t sound like anybody else but his unique and multi- faceted talents incorporate the history of country music as well as its future.

For over 70 years Jim Rooney has been involved in many phases of the music business. Starting out as a performer, with banjo playing partner Bill Keith--a partnership which lasted until Bill’s death in 2015--Jim played an important part in the folk revival of the ‘60’s. He managed the legendary Club 47 in Cambridge, Mass, and then became a Director of and the talent coordinator for the Newport Folk Festival. For the past 40 years Jim has worked in Nashville, TN as a musician, songwriter, recording engineer, Grammy-winning record producer and partner in a successful music publishing company, Forerunner Music. Jim is best known for his record production with Nanci Griffith, John Prine, Iris Dement, Hal Ketchum, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, and Peter Rowan. In 2009 he received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Americana Music Association for his work as an engineer/producer. Recently Jim was honored by the International Bluegrass Music Association with a “Distinguished Achievement Award.” For 25 years Jim headed up Rooney's Irregulars whose members were some of Nashville's top players, including Shawn Camp, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Pat Alger, Tim O'Brien, Dan Dugmore, Pete Wasner, Jellyroll Johnson, to name a few. At 86 Jim is showing no signs of slowing down. He likes nothing better than sitting and swapping songs with lifelong friends like Shawn.
