Kasey Anderson

"I love Kasey Anderson’s writing – he’s a writer’s writer, which I often say about songwriters who tend to write as though they are building a narrative arc for a book within each song." — Hanif Abdurraqib

Whether you know it or not, you've heard Kasey Anderson's songs before. Maybe "Don't Look Back" showed up on a playlist you were sent after a breakup. Maybe you heard "Like Teenage Gravity" on Counting Crows' album Underwater Sunshine and assumed the plaintive, plainspoken lyricism was the work of Adam Duritz, when in fact Anderson had written the song for his 2009 album Nowhere Nights. Or maybe you were one of the few million people who took up Anderson's song "The Dangerous Ones" — first released in 2018 under the name Hawks and Doves, on the album From a White Hotel — as a rallying cry in the summer of 2020 as the country careened towards the presidential election. It could be that you saw Kasey Anderson open for Jason Isbell, or Counting Crows, or Steve Earle, or any number of other household name artists who've sung Anderson's praises (and in the case of Crows, his songs) over the years. The point is, you've likely heard Kasey Anderson's songs before and, as he readies his final album, To the Places We Lived, and sets out on one last farewell run of shows, it's probably time you listened to Kasey Anderson again.

Samuel Aaron

There’s a delicate intimacy that Samuel Aaron brings to the Chicago indie music scene. The Portland, Oregon-born artist is difficult to categorize, as he weaves his time between singer-songwriter and producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist. His soulful, vulnerable music sits somewhere between folk and alt-rock, and continues to evolve with every release. His latest record, Versions of Love Songs, was listed as one of the best Chicago projects of 2022 by local publications Lyrical Lemonade and These Days, who called the project “truly homegrown, encapsulating Aaron’s raw approach to creating art and sharing it with others.” Second Street referred to the ambitious EP as “a chill listen, but not without depth; a romantic album, but not without pain”.
