Description

In-person

This Jane’s Walk, taking place in Vine City/Atlanta University Center, focuses on themes of advocacy, history, and culture.

This walk, led by Doug Young — long-time Historic Preservation Director and Office of Design Director for the City of Atlanta — is inspired by Jane Jacob’s observations in the 14th chapter of The Death and Life of Great American Cities: “The Curse of Border Vacuums.” It wouldn’t hurt to read this — and the chapter before it, “The Self Destruction of Diversity” — prior to the walk!

We will focus on better understanding growth pressures and design challenges along “border vacuums” adjacent to single-family neighborhoods experiencing much more density and new mixes of uses. Walk with Plan A city planners as we explore a few city blocks that are being discussed by residents all over the city during the current comprehensive planning process. Learn more about Plan A at AtlantaForAll.com.

About Jane's Walk

Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival honoring the legacy of urbanist, activist, and writer Jane Jacobs with free, citizen-led walking tours through the neighborhoods that lend so much character to our cities.

The festival promotes civic engagement and encourages leaders and participants to share stories about their communities and use walking as a means of connecting with their neighbors.

About the Leader of This Walk

Doug Young is a long-time Historic Preservation Director for the City, and he now serves as the Office of Design Director. He has a wealth of knowledge and a bevy of contacts to bring his walk to life in Vine City and AUC (Atlanta University Center).
